Fish Control Fish schools at raw water intakes can pose challenges for power stations. On the one hand fish can cause problems if sucked into the intake and on the other hand, power station technology must not interfere with fish ecology. Below are some technologies used to scare fish away from water intakes: 1. Strobe Lights 2. Sound Waves 3. Ultra Sound Waves 4. Air Bubbles 5. Louvres 6. Screens 7. Electrical Shock Civil structure design is also crucial in hydro power stations because changes in water flow and pressure can confuse fish swimming up river to spawn. The US Army Corps of Engineers has done extensive research in this area and have developed computer models for fish havior.
