Introduction

The future is bright for chemistry and consulting chemists. Our world resources are finite and hence the economy needs to become, through various frameworks, technologies and government/business strategies, more and more circular. This means that every resource extracted needs to be recycled. From phosphorus, fertilizers, to water, to metals, petroleum and petrochemicals, to construction materials, to chemicals, to textiles, to paper, to food to CO2. The spirit of the ancient alchemists is rising – we all need to find the ultimate material: The Philosopher’s Stone.

The Chemistry of Recycling

The simplest molecule that we constantly recycle is water. Water treatment technology can recycle waste water streams back to pure water infinitely. We also recycle metals – aluminium, iron, copper, platinum etc. Soil is a resource we need to pay more attention too as soil quality is degrading world wide and without soil we cannot feed ourselves. CO2 is a green house gas that we need to start recycling as the end product of combustion processes that is accumulating at an alarming rate in the atmosphere. We all know about plastic recycling in one form or another but what most people don’t know is that it is a very dirty and energy/chemical/water intensive process. Phosphorus is an element that is essential for life. We cannot live without it, it is in our food, our bones, our DNA and in ATP the energy currency of all living things. The chemistry of cement is very interesting and we need to start to recycle construction materials more intensively. Chemicals like sulphuric acid are essential for extracting phosphates and making gypsum and all kinds of surfactants and without sulphur we cannot vulcanise rubber into tyres. Sodium Chloride or table salt is another chemical we recycle indefinitely believe or not. We need NaCl in the chlor-alkali industry to make sodium hydroxide, hydrogen and chlorine a very important disinfectant. Nitrates are very important fertilizers for growing food and we produce them from Nitrogen in the air and hydrogen using the Haber Process. Wood is an amazing material that grows naturally and we are destroying world reserves of wood at an alarming rate. Chemical Recycling is increasingly becoming a highly sought after technology to tackle the problem of non-recyclables like PVC through de-polymerization. Various pollutants in the environment need to be removed and broken down back to their building chemical elements. Green chemicals are needed to replace non-sustainable ones.

Services Offered

Kremesti Environmental Consulting offers businesses and governments consulting services in the area of circular chemistry. We specialize in water treatment but we also have an in depth understanding of industrial chemistry, power generation and recycling methods. Banks, business leaders and finance institutions need to start to understand circularity at the chemical level and not fall for green washing slogans.

Why Do I Need A Consulting Chemist?

If you are a water treatment utility, there are many end of cycle products that need to be turned into starting materials. Phosphorus is one of them. Incinerated Sewage Sludge Ash – ISSA – can be used in the cement industry. Many pollutants require more chemistry intensive processes. If you are an industrial conglomerate, you need to find more channels and technologies to valorise your end of cycle products.

Collaboration between various industries and strategic vision from various stakeholders such governments, banks and academic institutions is required to bring about a circular future. The coming 50 years are going to be very exciting as we bring about this 21st century revolution.

What Does the Future Look Like?

In the next 50 years, society is going to become more and more circular – just like a living forest or living organism – where nothing is wasted. Less and less CO2 will be produced and more captured and recycled. Forest decline will be reversed. Rivers like the Thames and Danube will become cleaner. The economy will become one big recycling hub. Less resources will be wasted on meaningless wars and more on building a healthy environment and Earth eco-system. People will get fed up with the slop of AI and automation and seek out more natural and spiritual experiences where they feel connected and whole. Cities will become like villages embedded in forests or urban gardens. Internal Combustion Engine cars will disappear. Rampant consumerism will decline and decentralization will spread as produce local, buy local, eat local, recycle local become a way of life.

A Call to Action

We all have witnessed enough meaningless wars, the result of ignorance, greed and arrogance. Our cities, the air we breathe, our soil and our rivers are polluted and many people are depressed, anxious and unhappy despite the abundance and advanced technology all around us. We need to simplify our lives and return to nature and communal living. Extract, consume, hoard, dump – out of sight and out of mind – this is not the way of responsible, compassionate human beings. We are a gifted and intelligent species and the time is nigh for us to come to our senses… Let us make it happen:

Heaven of Earth….

About the Author

Rami Elias Kremesti is a consulting chemist and published author. Throughout his life and career he has studied, witnessed and lived the beauty of creation. The slogan of his consultancy,

Transmutare Substantiarum Basium In Aurum TM

points to the philosophy and quest of ancient alchemists, namely, to find the Philosopher’s Stone that can convert base substances into gold through raising human consciousness to the level of the Divine.
