My Journey In The Field of Water Treatment
It all started in 2005. I got a job as an Application Engineer with Nalco, Saudi. I did an intensive three part course with Nalco and I concomitantly was analyzing cooling tower waters as well as boiler water in SABIC petro-chemical plants in Jubail Industrial City. It was an amazing experience, both technically and culturally.
My next assignment was with Watermaster SARL in Lebanon where I got to apply my chemistry knowledge to set up a water analysis lab and diagnose/clean fouled RO systems. I was also working as a proposal engineer on water treatment projects for swimming pools.
After that I moved to Bulgaria because of the Hezbollah-Israel war of 2006. I got an amazing job with AES as a Water Treatment Plant Supervisor at the Maritza East I power station subsequently renamed Galabovo Power Station. I witnessed the water treatment plant being built from scratch and I also got to review some of the designs and PID’s. Amazing learning experience. The RO at this plant ran for 10 straight years without needing to have its membranes changed which is quite the record.
My following assignment was at the Belchatow Power Station in Poland with ALSTOM. I was the Turnkey Manager. We took the WTP from construction phase completion into commissioning. There I enjoyed commissioning the clarifiers, and the demin plan which was a DOW ion exchange plant. I also worked a little bit on the Condensate Polishing Plant. After successful completion, I was seconded to Terga Power Station in Algeria where I commissioned a thermal desalination plant which evaporates sea water using stages under vacuum. It was another amazing experience both technically and culturally.
From Algeria I joined ALSTOM, Baden in Switzerland where I worked for almost three years as a Waste Water Treatment Specialist designing the Tzafit Power Station waste water pumping stations, the Oil Water Separator, the hot blow down cooling system and the sewage treatment plant which was built by JS Umwelttechnik and uses MBBR technology.
After my layoff in 2014, I went to Iraq to commission the NOVASEP process for sugar decolorization at the Etihad Sugar Factory in Babylon which we succeeded to do in a record three months. From there I was called to join the Duro Felguera team at Carrington Power Station near Manchester. There I commissioned the clarifiers and the demin plant plus the water/steam dosing/sampling system. I also disinfected the potable water system for the admin buildings. Since then I have been working in the UK.
I had the pleasure to work in Building Services, Waste Water Treatment as well as Drinking Water treatment sites as part of the the Thames Water AMP7 framework. I also consulted for VIRIDOR on one of their plastics recycling facilities near Bristol where I worked on a waste water treatment and recovery system.
So far it has been such an amazing journey and I wish my dad was alive to witness all the amazing things I got to do with my chemistry knowledge since my graduation.
I currently consult for some companies helping them with their water and waste water treatment issues as well as developing training materials for Reverse Osmosis technology and best practices. In my spare time I love to read, cook and play guitar.
