History
I started working with RO technology on a coal fired power station in Bulgaria in 2007. The membranes lasted ten years. The pre-treatment consisted of a Densadeg clarifier followed by active carbon filtration, chlorination-dechlorination. The system was connected to a static CIP (Clean In Place) system and regular disinfections and cleanings were done.
Applications
RO technology is used in industry to produce water that has low TDS. In sea water desalination, RO is used to produce potable water from saline sea water.
It can also be used to remove any toxic ions from water such as heavy metals. In medicine, it is used in Dialysis systems. In pharma, it is used to produce WFI = Water for Injection.
RO Training
I teach an RO course with CIWEM. In this course we cover basic topics such as design, operations and maintenance and membrane autopsies. RO systems are used on power stations to produce demineralized water. They can also be used to recycle cooling tower blowdown water. Seawater RO systems are used to turn sea water into drinking water in countries such as Saudi Arabia and Israel. RO systems are much more efficient that Multiple Effect Evaporation desalination systems which require a lot of energy to distil the water. However, RO systems are vulnerable to scaling and biofouling. Therefore a good understanding of RO operations and regular testing and continuous monitoring of parameters such as flow, conductivity and feed pressure are necessary.
RO systems have been used successfully in Singapore to transform tertiary sewage effluent into drinking water using the Newater technology. They can also be used to remove PFAS from waste water.
