Water Treatment Consultant High Wycombe
Introduction
My name is Rami Elias Kremesti (pictured below), I am a water treatment consultant based out of High Wycombe in the UK. This is a city strategically located between London and Oxford. I am also very close to Reading where Thames Water is based. The area is located in the Chilterns which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where several drinking water boreholes are located. The Thames is close by in Marlow too.
How It All Started
My passion in Chemistry started to manifest itself in 9th grade in High School. I was the best chemistry student in class. So I went on to major in chemistry and i got my Bachelors degree in chemistry in 1995 then my Masters degree in 1998.
For the past twenty years I have been working in water treatment in various industries and functions. I worked on power stations for 10 years, I also worked in sewage treatment, building services, plastics refining waste water treatment as well as drinking water treatment.
Water treatment requires that you know your water treatment processes well things like clarifiers, coagulation, flocculation, desalination, ion exchange, filtration, softening and disinfection. Chemicals sometimes play a very important role. You have to know your chemistry as well and a little bit about microbiology. The water treatment systems are electro-mechanical so it helps during commissioning if you know a little bit about these systems. Sensors are a very important part of monitoring the water treatment process, so parameters like flow, pressure, conductivity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen and pH are very important.
The Basics
Water treatment always starts with a water analysis. You need to know what is in the water. For example, if there are heavy metals you need to know the levels and after you treat the water you need to make sure there are no heavy metals left. If there is hardness in the water you need to measure Calcium and Magnesium levels as well as alkalinity. If your water is turning red there must be iron in the water. Before discharging treated sewage into a river or estuary we need to make sure you have removed most of the BOD, COD, Phosphorus and Nitrogen from the water. If the estuary or river is someplace where people like to swim we need to reduce the TVC total viable count of bacteria.
Last but not least before we can care for the environment, we need to make sure the society where we live is peaceful because if there is a war, then environmental concerns go out the window. I grew up in Lebanon during the civil war so caring for the environment was the last thing on people’s mind. Even in the neighbourhood where I live, many people are struggling financially, which is a form of lack of peace, and this reflects itself in littering on the streets.
When society is peaceful we need to make sure that the environment is clean because our food, our water, our air, our soil, our trees, our climate that is all impacted by the pollutants we release to the environment. I am very philosophical about these things and I have published three books on religion, aesthetics, and philosophy. This is my book page:
